Matthew 14:18-30 Modern English Version (MEV)

18. He said, “Bring them here to Me.”

19. Then He commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to His disciples; and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

20. They all ate and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

21. Those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22. Then Jesus commanded His disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.

23. When He sent the crowds away, He went up into a mountain by Himself to pray. And when evening came, He was there alone.

24. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was turbulent.

25. During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

26. But when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a spirit.” And they cried out in fear.

27. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer. It is I. Do not be afraid.”

28. Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, bid me come to You on the water.”

29. He said, “Come.”And when Peter got out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

30. But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
